The design and development of a new structural package for Merck (originally Schering-Plough) Beclomethasone corticosteroid medication for the seasonal allergy and sinus relief franchise was intended to address the need for enhanced product delivery and consumer use efficacy. The package was designed to dispense 60 single metered pump doses.
The primary purpose for the redesign project was to ensure that consumers position and release the precise, metered amount of spray into their nasal cavity with improved accuracy. Diverse packaging materials, manufacturing processes and form design exploration were evaluated.
Working across R&D, marketing and engineering functions, this full-spectrum, in-house design effort resulted in the award of six USPTO Design Patents, with one design solution chosen and introduced worldwide the following year.
